What does RWS Certified mean?
May 05,2022 Evelyn Shi
The Responsible Wool Standard certification means that the wool we used comes from a farm that have a good approach to managing their land, and practice holistic respect for animal welfare of the sheep. RWS is a well-recognized standard that addresses the welfare of sheep and the land they graze on.
What is the background of RWS?
The Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) was developed through an open and transparent process led by Textile Exchange and a multi-stakeholder group that included representatives from across the industry and different sectors, including animal welfare groups, industry organizations, supply chain members, brands, and area experts. All policies and procedures are based on the ISEAL Best Practices. Textile Exchange was established in 2002 and has played a powerful role within the textile industry to support the understanding and use of sustainable materials like fiber wool and proper verification strategies. Textile Exchange has extensive experience in standards development and ownership, however this organization doesn’t engage in any certification activities, but only focus on supporting the quality and adoption of its standards.
What is the purpose of the RWS label?
Fiber wool is one of the most important textile material. The Responsible Wool Standard label enables the sheep well being for wool production.
Why does the RWS matter?
- Sheep welfare respect : ethical treatment of animals is at the core of the RWS certification and that’s what makes it so important to us at Our Company.. With RWS, the ‘five freedoms” of sheep are always protected: freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury, or disease, freedom to express normal behavior, and freedom from fear and distress.
- Better land management practices: RWS also ensures that the farms we work with use progressive methods of land management. On RWS Certified farms, farmers must demonstrate that they employ best practices to protect soil health, biodiversity, and native species.
- Transparent communication: RWS certification is developed through an open and transparent process with multi-stakeholder group that could trace back.
-
Provide robust chain of custody from farm to wool supplier to final product.
-
Create an industry benchmark to drive improvements in animal care and land management where needed.
Who can get certified RWS?
Farmers who produce sheep's fiber wool, wool supplier, manufacturers of textile products using fiber wool, distributors and brands can be certified RWS.
The RWS requires all sites to be certified, beginning with the wool farmers and through to wool supplier to the seller in the final business to business transaction. Usually the last stage to be certified is the garment manufacturer or brand. Retailers (business-to-consumers) are not required to be certified. Farms are certified to the Animal Welfare and Land Management and Social Modules of the RWS.
